Ridges At Sand Creek

By R.J. Smiley

Just east of Jordan, MN surrounded by farm land you will find The Ridges at Sand Creek. When owner and general manager, Mike Malone brought in Joel Goldstrand to design his golf course, few golfers would have believed the incredible variety of holes Goldstrand would create on this combination of wind swept highlands and river valley lowlands.

Looking down the first fairway, you forget you are in farm country even though there is not a tree in sight. Upon completion of the second hole, it is a long downhill walk into the beautiful valley created by Sand Creek. Holes three through six are heavily wooded with the fast moving waters of Sand Creek coming into play on three of them. The sixth hole, one of Joel Goldstrand’s finest creations, demands an accurate tee shot then an approach to the green cocked at an odd angle with the creek hugging the right side the entire length of the green. Shift gears again, it is out of the valley and up to the wind swept highlands for seven, eight and nine. On the ninth you will notice the man-made, rapidly flowing brook that winds its way through the ninth and eighteenth holes.

On the back nine, the tenth and eighteenth are highland holes the other seven are a variety of beautifully designed holes with Sand Creek as only one of the demanding features. The elevated tee on the twelfth gives golfers an impressive look at a good, short par 4. At number fourteen the diver is not an option. Big hitters have to lay up with a short iron, but the approach shot to the two-tiered green perched high above the creek is the most demanding shot on the golf course.

As you are cleaning your clubs after your round you will discover that you have used every club in your bag and on your trip home you will recall the vivid memory of each hole at The Ridges at Sand Creek.
