POCKET-TO-POCKET
By Greg Schulze, PGA Master Professional of Player Development
In a never-ending effort of keeping my clients minds off golf-only images and terms and onto non-golf, yet relatable imagery, the following is an attempt to describe how to “build” your full-swing backswing body motions using the images of your BACK PANT POCKETS… Odd? You know where they are, right?
First image – SETUP:
Prerequisite – Your setup POSTURE has been pre-approved by your PGA Professional.
Now, imagine the inner side of BOTH back pants pockets gently touching an invisible wall.
Second image – BACKSWING:
As you swing the club back, feel and image the BACK POCKET ONLY touching the wall.
Third image – IMPACT:
Sense the FRONT POCKET ONLY touching the wall.
The worst-case scenario is called EARLY EXTENSION, caused by “untrained” or misunderstood hip pivot. If early extension occurs, both of your back pant pockets “disconnect” from the wall and a series of compensations would have to line up (in less than .1 second) in time for impact. Do you think you’ll make it? If your swing video shows early extension, please seek the guidance of your PGA Professional.
The MOST important message is that the proper imagery and jingles can simplify required swing mechanics. A “POCKET-TO-POCKET” jingle is mechanically correct, easy to remember, and you will gain a heightened feel of efficient body motions in the full-swing as you practice.
SMARTER, NOT HARDER…
