As I walked into the over 1 million square-foot Orange County Convention Center that was hosting the 2020 PGA Merchandize show I wondered if I was going to find any game changing technology.

There is one name that might stick out in Minnesota Section member’s and other golfers across the region’s minds when they think of one of the greatest golfers in the area: Don Berry. But one of the most prolific golfers in the Section doesn’t see himself in that light – yet.

About this time last year, golf’s governing bodies unveiled a brand-new Rules of Golf. So, I took it upon myself to try and offer a more common sense, if not semi-humorous approach to rule changes.

How are we supposed to keep our golf games in shape? Where do we go to maintain our sanity… to hit balls, hang out with similar-minded golf friends and ultimately pretend that… well… baby, it isn’t so darn cold outside?

With our outdoor playing days officially shut-down for the season it’s comforting to know that we can keep those swing mechanics on-plane while still logging some quality time with the buddies. In fact, you can still keep those betting games on the table using the incredibly realistic simulators that have entered the market in recent years.

Every year I tell people about my favorite places to golf: Ireland. Scotland. Oregon. Burnsville. I don’t get any raised eyebrows over the first three. But I do get a few questions about the fourth. “Burnsville… as in Minnesota?” Yes.

During Week 14 of the NFL season, hundreds of players from across the league will wear custom cleats to promote causes that matter to them for the NFL’s My Cause, My Cleats campaign.

Would you like to double or triple the income of your existing golf tournament? There are over 500,000 golf tournaments in the U.S. each year. The average event raises between $5,000 and $8,000. Why do some tournaments raise $80,000 to $100,000? They have a plan. They have a clear picture and goal of what they want to accomplish.

To wrap this series up, I thought it would be appropriate to acknowledge the diligent promotional agents we have – from national brands like Troon Golf, KemperSports and Buffalo Agency, local ambassadors like Steve Wetzler and Kim Benjamin of this magazine.

As the 2019 golf season winds down I propose this question, “What can you do to become better once the leaves have fallen, the frosty pumpkin is now, well frosted, and the golf courses will soon be closed up here in the Netherlands or anyplace north of the 45th parallel?”

Hard to believe, but there really are people that quit golf. Each year the National Golf Foundation releases its report on how many players have either started or quit golf and each year those numbers seem to be relatively even.

The Psychic is a man! The Psychic is a golfer! The Psychic’s golf game suffers as father time marches on. All golfers have made this statement after a bad round, “I think I will just throw my golf clubs in the trash and quit! But… what will I do then.”
