When developer Fred Plocher purchased the property, he envisioned a golf community that would take advantage of the natural beauty already present on the land. Architect Bill Maple, along with former Hazeltine pro Mike Schultz, were hired to design the course, routing fairways through the rolling landscape while incorporating views of Lake Bavaria, Church Lake, and Lake Wasserman.

On August 20, 1989, Deer Run Golf Club officially opened as a par-71 championship golf course. Rather than replace the original estate farmhouse, ownership preserved it and transformed it into the clubhouse, helping establish the unique character golfers still appreciate today.

While the golf course provided the foundation, the personality of Deer Run was shaped by the people who call it home.

Few individuals have had a greater impact than longtime Head PGA Professional Tom Abts. When Abts arrived, Deer Run was still a young golf course and something of a hidden gem. Rather than waiting for golfers to discover it, he focused on creating opportunities for people to experience Deer Run firsthand.

He organized large free golf clinics that introduced countless players to the game and helped establish league programs that remain popular today. He also launched creative promotions designed to make golf more inviting and enjoyable. One of those ideas was “Fast Play Friday,” a concept that helped establish Deer Run’s reputation for excellent pace of play. That commitment to making golf enjoyable remains a core part of the club’s identity.

“The key to our vibe and how I run this place is based on this concept: the staff is my family, and the golfers are my friends,” says Abts. “That’s how I look at Deer Run. My obsession is respect – back and forth between staff and golfers. Respect, fun, humor, while sharing the joy of golf.”

It’s a philosophy that can be felt throughout the property. Visitors quickly notice that Deer Run doesn’t take itself too seriously. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is engaging, and the clubhouse buzzes with the energy of golfers sharing stories long after their rounds are complete.

The transformation of the clubhouse bar into an Irish Pub helped reinforce that identity. The Celtic-inspired atmosphere became a natural extension of Deer Run’s personality, creating a gathering place where golfers can enjoy a cold beverage, share a few laughs, and relive the best – and worst – shots of the day.

It isn’t unusual for first-time visitors to feel like regulars before they leave. That sense of community has become one of Deer Run’s greatest strengths. Golf leagues, outings, charity events, and everyday rounds all blend together into an environment where friendships are formed, and memories are created.

Of course, none of this would matter if the golf course didn’t deliver. Deer Run’s layout remains one of the most enjoyable public golf experiences in the Twin Cities. Maple’s design uses the property’s natural elevation changes to create a course that is both challenging and fair. Tree-lined fairways, strategic water hazards, and memorable views provide enough challenge for accomplished players while remaining approachable for recreational golfers.

Yet even with a quality golf course, Deer Run has never lost sight of what truly separates it from many facilities. Golf should be enjoyable. That philosophy has helped Deer Run thrive through changing times and evolving golf trends. While technology and equipment continue to evolve, the club’s commitment to hospitality, friendships, and fun remains constant.
