Women Teeing It Up For Our Women Veterans
By Kim Benjamin
Women in the military have a history that extends over 4,000 years into the past, throughout a vast number of cultures and nations. Women have played many roles in the military, from ancient warrior women, to the women serving in current conflicts. Women have served in the military from the American Revolution to the present, and today roughly 15 percent of all veterans are women.
Women serve in the military for the same reasons as men. There has been an obvious inequity in recognition for our women veterans and their service to our country. It’s time to recognize these veterans and honor their contributions and sacrifices they made along side their male counterparts that allow us to enjoy the freedoms we cherish.
Many Minnesota golfers are familiar with the local and national efforts of the Tee It Up For The Troops organization and their efforts. Tee It Up For The Troops was created to honor the request of a soldier to his father and to recognize the needs of all veterans who have served and continue to serve this great nation. One of the co-founders of TIUFTT, Harry Wisdom, Lt. Col. (Ret) US Army, has initiated a group of women around the goal of recognizing and honoring these women veterans with a ladies only golf benefit event.
Women Teeing It Up For Our Women Veterans’ inaugural event is scheduled for June 18th, 2012 at The Wilds Golf Course in Prior Lake. Initial plans include a 9-hole Scramble event in the morning followed by an afternoon 18-hole Shotgun tournament. Between golf events will be a ceremony with honor guard, bagpiper, bugler playing Taps, singing of the National Anthem, Gold Star Mothers laying a wreath and invocation. ALL performed by WOMEN ONLY. The golf event will be women only participating however men are encouraged to get involved with registration and bag check as well as being welcomed to come take in the ceremony.
Other features of the day will include local PGA and LPGA professionals giving pre-event demonstrations and practice tee lessons, lunch and after event dinner, on course contests and a raffle.
Lt. Col. Stefanie Horvath from the Minnesota National Guard and committee member comments, “It is tremendous to be a part of this event that not only recognizes women veterans, but also supports the programs that address unique concerns of women veterans. Seeing the support from different facets of the community certainly gives greater meaning to the event.”
This one-of-a-kind event will sell out fast so for more details and information to get involved, be a participant, be a sponsor or even to share your story please visit the Tee It Up For The Troops website and click on Women Teeing It Up For Our Women Veterans tab for all the details.
Proceeds from this inaugural event will be channeled through the Tee It Up For The Troops organization to support programs and initiatives for our women veterans.
The courage, sacrifice and commitment of our women veterans pairs equally with our men in service. NOW is the time to recognize and honor these amazing, brave women.
