The Gravel Pit – Where Golf Meets Fun And Friends
By Steve Wetzler
Nestled just north of Cragun’s Resort in Brainerd, Minnesota, The Gravel Pit Golf Course has quickly become one of the most talked-about additions to the region’s golf scene. This former industrial gravel pit has been transformed into a 13-hole par-3 course, a 10.5-hole additional course, a 13 hole putting course, a vibrant event center, and a haven for golfers seeking both challenge and camaraderie – guided by the experienced hand of Chuck Klecatsky.
Designed in 2022 by Scott Hoffmann (not related to course superintendent Nicholas Hoffmann), The Gravel Pit is a compact par-3 layout that ranges from 32 to 195 yards, totaling approximately 1,632 yards and 1,113 yards from the back tees. Crafted on sand and seeded primarily with fine fescue, the course mirrors traditional links-style landscapes and operates on remarkably low-maintenance systems – only two mowers serve the entire course.
The course earned instant acclaim for its innovative features: dramatic elevation changes, visually imposing bunkers and water hazards, and quirky green designs such as the inverted Biarritz and a green bisected around a tree. Golf architecture enthusiasts laud the blind shots and blown-out bunkers, though some argue the visual intimidation might challenge beginners.
Leading The Gravel Pit’s golf operations is Chuck Klecatsky, former Director of Golf and Head Professional at Cragun’s Legacy Courses. Chuck was instrumental in guiding the country’s top-tier courses – including Cragun’s and Innisbrook – to PGA TOUR-level events. But at The Gravel Pit, he brought fresh energy and a return to golf’s spirit of fun. He describes the course as “back to the spirit of friendship and fellowship” – less formal, more engaging.
Chuck’s vision led to a rapid expansion. After a strong debut year, The Gravel Pit added a second “10.5-hole” par-3 layout, featuring a cheekily named half-hole: a 69-yard ridge-to-green putt ending near the parking lot. This addition caters to golfers wanting a quick round or a longer afternoon adventure without committing to a full-length course.
The Gravel Pit is built for community:
- Full-service clubhouse and bar with sweeping patio views of the entire course, complemented by outdoor fireplaces under a pergola
- Extreme 13-hole putting course where friends can compete casually after hitting the shorter holes
- Bocce ball courts for non-golfers to join the fun
- Event and wedding hosting, including youth tournaments – Chuck helped launch the “Lakes Area Youth Golf Championship,” attracting 60–80 junior players and enabling multi-generational play
- Unique hole‑in‑one contests and jackpots, where part of the proceeds fund junior golf, encouraging accessibility and community engagement
- Live music and seasonal events, all designed to keep the atmosphere lively
Klecatsky states, “We do a lot of bachelor parties and things where people do play the golf course (before), but we have a 13-hole putting course so groups can just come out and use that. We do weddings, groom’s dinners, corporate events.” Multi-generational outings are a strong point: Chuck notes grandparents, parents, and kids playing together – a seamless experience rarely offered on traditional resorts.
Adding to the fun, the The Gravel Pit is outfitted with the new SmartPin – as seen on TGL this winter. Amateur golfers can win epic prize money for ‘gimmes’ and ‘aces’ using the SmartPin app. Whether you knock it close or in the water, every SmartPin shot is captured from tee to green creating a highlight video that’s ready to share in minutes.
Under Chuck’s guidance, The Gravel Pit shows no sign of slowing. Potential expansions include lighting for night golf, a larger clubhouse deck, and continued emphasis on youth events and social experiences.
In a golf world often defined by 18‑hole seriousness, The Gravel Pit is celebrated for bringing back fun – under 2‑hour rounds, unique designs, family‑friendly hospitality, and Chuck Klecatsky’s infectious enthusiasm. It’s not just another course – it’s an experience that redefines what a round of golf can be.
Coequal parts innovative architecture, social playground, and community hub, The Gravel Pit stands out in the Brainerd market as much more than a novelty: it’s the antidote to golf’s complexity, delivered with warmth and creativity. Whether you’re lining up a short wedge shot, launching a half-hole putt, or clinking glasses on the patio at sunset, this gravel pit is a gem worth discovering.
