3M Open – Golf That Matters

Six years ago, the PGA TOUR Champions’ 3M Championship made the transformation to the PGA’s 3M Open. With the slogan, “Golf That Matters,” the 3M Open proved that the move to the PGA TOUR was more than just a name change.

All five of the previous editions have delivered not only top-quality golf provided by the “young guns” of the PGA TOUR, but also have made quite a mark on the Twin Cites community via the various charities the tournament supports.

Each of the first five years, the 3M has provided fans with memorable Sunday finishes. The 2024 version, with a mix of veterans and fresh faces, promises this year will be no different.

Some of the familiar names include past champions Lee Hodges and Tony Finau, along with past PGA TOUR winners like Kurt Kitayama, Taylor Moore, J.T. Poston, Joel Dahmen, Billy Horschel, Zach Johnson, Justin Rose, Sahith Theegala and Sam Burns and newly named 2025 Ryder Cup Captain Keegan Bradley!

Looking to make a name for themselves on the PGA TOUR, a host of new faces will roam the fairways at TPC Twin Cities.

Recently, four of them – Luke Clanton, Nick Dunlap, Neal Shipley, Michael Thorbjornsen – all finished high in the final standings at PGA TOUR events and have committed to the 156-player field at the 3M Open.

“The youth movement on the PGA TOUR has certainly been in the spotlight this summer and we are elated that these four players will be joining us,” said 3M Open Tournament Director Mike Welch. “There are a lot of young golfers in the Minnesota area, and I know they will be excited to come out and see how these guys do when we have one of the best fields in recent years gather here.”

No matter who takes home the trophy, this year, like every year, charity is the real winner thanks to the tournament’s charity wing The 3M Open Fund. The 3M Open Fund, based in Minnesota, is a non-profit 501(c)3 foundation created when the tournament was founded by 3M and the PGA TOUR in 2019. The 3M Open serves as the principal fundraiser for the organization’s efforts to support local and regional charitable organizations. The foundation’s mission aligns with 3M’s commitment to improve lives in communities where we live, work, and learn.

Below are the nonprofits the 3M Open Fund supported in 2023:

First Tee Minnesota

The First Tee Minnesota continues its commitment to impact the lives of young people by providing programs that build character, instill life enhancing values, and promotes healthy choices through the game of golf.

M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital

As a land-grant university and an academic health system, M Health Fairview has been a leader in the Twin Cities community and beyond, providing clinical research and expertise to support of those that have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, through teamwork and collaboration across the entire system, M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital respectfully addresses the physical, emotional, cultural, and spiritual needs of pediatric patients and their families. Their compassionate, innovative approach has repeatedly received national recognition.

Greater Twin Cities United Way

The 3M Open, in partnership with Greater Twin Cities United Way, presented Jessica Rogers the Social Justice Leadership Award and provided a $7,500 grant to her nonprofit organization, Connections to Independence.

Rogers’ established her organization in 2010 with a mission to provide unique programming and advocacy for foster care youth, ages 14-24, to promote a successful and healthy transition to living independently as they reach adulthood. Rogers also serves as the Executive Director.

Through Rogers’ leadership and collaboration with multiple other local nonprofits and foundations, the outcomes of the youth in the program have exceeded national outcomes. This has gained attention from other states who are looking to Connections to Independence for insight on how to adapt the program in their own communities.

The YWCA of Minneapolis and the YWCA of St. Paul

YWCA of St. Paul is on a mission to eliminate racism, empower women and promote peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all.

YWCA of Minneapolis has been cultivating an inclusive and healthy community through a range of programs, classes and workshops. They provide high-quality Racial Justice, Early Childhood Education, Girls & Youth, Health & Wellness and Workforce Development programs that help build a vibrant, healthy community for all.
