What Is The PGA Jr. League Team
By Maggie Sutton
PGA Jr. League is the flagship youth pillar program of PGA REACH, with the goal of making the program accessible to all interested kids in the United States and around the world. As such, the program focuses on fun, recreation, good health and sportsmanship.
At its core, PGA Jr. League is a group of local golf teams who play a series of games against each other, utilizing a nurturing and social scramble format. The program is available to boys and girls of all skill levels 13 and under, while many facilities also offer 17 and under programs. PGA and LPGA Professionals exclusively serve as Captains and are responsible for creating a welcoming environment for all that encourages skill and character development.
PGA Jr. League is recreational and developmental in nature and works with PGA Sections and local youth organizations across the country to offer an alternative, social golf format. This unique approach highlights team play versus individual competition and serves as a feeder system to transition youth golfers to existing junior golf programs.
During the course of one game, teams play four 9-hole matches in a popular two-person scramble format, reinforcing the team concept and creating a nurturing environment for learning the game. Coaches can also substitute players every three holes, so that all the golfers on each team can participate.
A league is made up of local teams within your geographic area, minimizing the distance and amount of time spent commuting between games. A league will typically have between four to seven teams and may consist of teams from just one facility or teams from a collection of facilities. During the regular season, your team will play a game against each team in your league.
This past season, Team Minnesota from TPT – Twin Cities made it to the National Championship and took home second place!
