Why You Should Plan A Trip To Ankeny, Iowa This Spring
By Steve Wetzler
A trip from the Twin Cities to Ankeny, Iowa, covers approximately 235 miles and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes via I35 South. The route offers scenic Midwest landscapes and interesting stops such as the SPAM Museum in Austin, Minnesota, and the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, Iowa, a famous music landmark. Travelers can also take a break in Ames, home to Iowa State University, for a meal or quick sightseeing.
Owned by the City of Ankeny and open to public play, Otter Creek Golf Course is a premier links-style destination with wide, open fairways lined by hills and fescue (and scattered ponds), offering an exceptional golfing experience. Designed by Paul Miller, the course is known for its low mow bluegrass fairways, some of the finest public golf greens in Iowa, challenging water hazards and tall prairie grasses, and thoughtfully arranged multiple tee boxes for all skill levels. The course is constantly maintained in excellent condition. Located just north of Des Moines in Ankeny, Otter Creek sits conveniently off I35, exit 94, making it easily accessible for travelers.
Otter Creek’s clubhouse is getting a facelift this winter – with new doors, carpet, paint and stain, Otter Creek will welcome golfers with a fresh new look.
Otter Creek’s par-71 course integrates natural prairie elements with strategic bunkering and water hazards. The layout tests golfers’ accuracy and strategy, especially in windy conditions. The course features 47 strategically placed bunkers, 17 water hazards that challenge approach shots and driving accuracy, large undulating greens that reward precise putting, and a well-maintained double-ended driving range, two practice putting greens, and a chipping area with a bunker for pre-round warmups. Golfers of all levels will find Otter Creek both challenging and enjoyable, with tee placements tailored for beginners to low-handicap players.
The holes you see from the interstate are the Par 3, 13th, that you just know you could ace if given enough opportunities, and the turbulent Par 4, 14th, launching towards the clubhouse on the hill, a hole with more tricks than you can see in a blurry blow-by. That duo is followed by the all-carry-over-pond Par 3, 15th, adjacent the clubhouse. “Thirteen to fifteen is our Amen Corner,” Curt grins. “You pray you keep the same ball through those three and say “Amen” if you succeed. And with two of those holes par 3’s, you may even get a little extra divine intervention!”
After a round of golf, players can unwind at the Tin Cup Bar & Grille, located in the clubhouse. The restaurant offers a casual atmosphere with both indoor and patio seating, a menu featuring specialty sandwiches, pizzas, and classic pub fare, a great selection of cold beers and cocktails, and multiple big-screen TVs for catching live sports events. It’s a perfect spot to relax post-round, whether celebrating a great game or simply enjoying good food with friends.
For those seeking an event venue, The Pinnacle Club at Otter Creek is a premier banquet facility that offers breathtaking views of the course and lake. It’s an ideal location for weddings and receptions of up to 200 guests, corporate events and business meetings, and golf tournaments and charity fundraisers. The venue provides full bar and catering services, buffet-style meals, and professional event coordination to ensure a seamless experience.
Beyond golf, Ankeny offers a variety of activities to round out your weekend trip. Firetrucker Brewery is a popular local craft brewery with live music events. The Iowa Culinary Institute provides a fine dining experience with gourmet meals prepared by top chefs. The Ankeny Art Center features rotating exhibits from regional artists.
