More Big Name Golf For Hazeltine National Golf Club

Another grey cold winter morning. The Psychic is awake, but he is still in bed. No reason to get up – must be the winter blues. The Psychic is bored! The Super Bowl is finally over. Who cares, I can’t stand Belichick and I hate the Eagles. When will the Vikings climb to the top of the mountain? Too cold for golf. The Olympics don’t start until the weekend.
The Psychic takes a long hot shower. In the mirror, he simulates his move away from the ball holding his towels in his interlocking grip. With nothing to do today, the Psychic crawled into his favorite Levis and his #4 Brett Favre Vikings jersey. Absentmindedly, he grabs his now sweat stained Ryder Cup cap and places it squarely on his head. Looking into the mirror, the Psychic uses both hands to mold the bill of the cap into a perfect curve. As his hands return to his sides, the psychic senses his magic marble calling out to him. The crystal sphere is in his study covered with the shammy cloth, but it is calling to him.
Still barefoot, the Psychic strides quickly into the study with the Hazeltine Ryder Cup cap resting perfectly on his head. The Psychic rips off the shammy to reveal a Star Tribune headline: Sandra Spuzich wins 1966 U.S. Women’s Open at Hazeltine. Before his mind had processed the news, the Psychic sees Tony Jacklin hoisting the 1970 U.S. Open Trophy as Dave Hill stands by pouting. Then images of Hollis Stacey beating LPGA rookie and darling of the gallery, Nancy Lopez, in 1977.
In rapid fire the Psychic sees a short clip of Billy Casper making a birdie putt of the 91st hole to win the 1983 U.S. Senior Open over Rod Funseth. He sees Tiger Woods let two majors slip through his fingers at Hazeltine, losing to golf’s one-day-wonders, Rich Beem and Y.E. Yang
The Psychic does not need his crystal ball to see images of the 2016 Ryder Cup – Patrick Reed’s clutch putt on the 18th to give Team USA the elusive Cup. The Psychic visualizes each of the 19 birdies in the best Ryder Cup match of all time as Sergio Garcia and Phil Michelson battle to a draw.
Drawn back to the now glowing sphere, the Psychic sees the parking lot at Canterbury Park filled with people rushing to get a seat on a shuttle bus. Volunteers, dressed in matching uniforms, direct people and control the traffic flow. Is this a replay of the Ryder Cup? No. Signs on the sides of the buses contain a logo – KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, Hazeltine National Golf Club June 20-23, 2019.
Another major championship for Hazeltine National.
Then the scene changes, the best women players in the world slip in and out of the Twin Cities unnoticed. They come to Hazeltine to discover the nuances of the famed golf course with secret practice rounds during the year before the Women’s PGA Championship.
The Psychic moves deeper into the crystal ball and sees executives from the PGA of America, the LPGA and KPMG focusing, not on golf course, but on the KPMG Women’s Leadership Summit. These three organizations will use the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship to draw attention to the Women’s Leadership Summit held on the grounds of Hazeltine the day before the start of the Championship. The Summit is forging a path for the next generation of women as they move boldly into leadership roles in corporate America. With the world watching the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Hazeltine, KPMG will shine a spotlight on The Women’s Leadership Summit.
As the light from within the crystal ball dims, the Psychic see two figures in the mist on the Swilken Bridge. As his eyes focus more sharply, the Psychic recognizes an aging Sergio Garcia standing on the replica of the Swilken Bridge at Hazeltine National Golf Club next to a grey haired Phil Mickelson. Is this a publicity stunt to make people remember the famous match in 2016? The flash bulbs flash as these two great golf champions walk slowly off the famous bridge as they head for their golf carts. One cart is marked Team Europe, the other Team USA.
The Psychic covers his crystal ball and looks down at his still bare feet. Smiling, the Psychic removes his sweat stained Ryder Cup cap and places it on the mantle near his only golf trophy. In his heart, the Psychic knows that Hazeltine will again host the Ryder Cup and Mickelson and Garcia will serve as Team Captains. Someday, the Psychic will have another Ryder Cup cap!
