Important People In Golf You've Never Heard Of...Craig Waryan
Craig Waryan
Craig Waryan

Craig Waryan doesn't fit the title of this story perfectly. This PGA Master Teaching Professional (one of the few in Minnesota) is a regular on KFAN's Golf Show with the Common Man, Dan Cole. He's also held prominent roles at area courses and teaching facilities. Some of you will certainly recognize the last name as well. Craig's uncles, Jack and Don Waryan also are long time golf professionals in the state.

A highly sought after teaching professional, Craig currently teaches at Edinbourgh USA in Brooklyn Park and for the Bird Golf Academy, one of the best golf schools in the world, with sites across the United States.

What really makes Craig Waryan unique is that he has such a wide ranging background that he can tap into as needed. "I have studied Feldenkrais "Awareness of Movement" and wrote my PGA Master Professional thesis based on his study and research. I began the study and research over 28 years ago, preparing to find a different way to communicate the game to players. I've studied with Dr. Prouse to learn more about how the body works in relation to the golf swing and the biomechanics of the game. I also studied with Dr. Carrie Mumford and Dr. Aryeh Nesher in the communication and education realm. Finally I studied Lannie Bassham, an Olympic medalist in shooting and Dr. Craig Farnsworth "Faldo's Putting Coach and visual concentration specialist". In order to produce golf champions and to produce positive results in the golf game you have to work with the individual. It is working", says Waryan.

Longtime student and area professional Eric Rolland has this to say about working with Craig; "I have known Craig Waryan since 2000.  The words I would use to describe Craig among others are; focused, considerate, generous, warm and a gentleman. When I met Craig in 2000 my game was decent, but after one season of working with Craig I finished 6th in the state open in 2001 and 02.  I would say that Craig's approach to the game is old school at the core with all the latest cutting edge knowledge of today, sprinkled through-out. Craig's teaching approach, which includes expertise in bio-mechanics, vision and learning styles, is individual to each student, which is possible because of his great knowledge of the game.  I think Craig can quickly analyze a student and get right to the heart of improving the student's game."

While Waryan has tons of knowledge, he also is quick to outsource if a student needs help outside his area of expertise. Craig acknowledges that there are areas of golf improvement that don't get enough attention. "The fact that physical fitness is just coming into vogue, I would say that this was the most neglected. Now the most neglected element is the mental/emotional part. We will run out to the practice tee to find our driver swing but do not understand why we missed the fairway, which could be due to poor planning. I would say that club fitting is also up there in the neglected department."

Craig was brought up in a golfing family. "I always looked up to Jack and Don as Professionals and as great individuals as well. My Dad, Bill taught me the game. I caddied for him in a number of tournaments which gave me a wonderful appreciation for competitive golf. When Dad and I played he always gave me the same line, "play hard, I want to beat you at your best". There were never many gimmes in our games. My mom, Muriel was very involved with the USGA, serving on the National Girl's Junior Committee. She was a good player in her own right.

Waryan is proud of his affiliation with Bird Golf. "Bird Academy is the best teaching and learning venue that I know of. I work with students on a one to one basis six plus hours per day for usually 3 to 5 days. We work on every aspect of the game and spend a great deal of time on the course learning to play better. It is not a cookie cutter operation. I design the week around the student's needs and goals. The student will leave the school with an improvement plan and a communication network. They will call, write and send videos for continued support. The partnership that I have between the student and myself is supported by a great staff at Bird Academy. Of his work with "The Common Man" Craig says, "The Common Man has become a close friend over the years. I hate to let out the secret but here goes...he is unbelievably bright, funny and a truly kind person that cares about people. He keeps it well hidden doesn't he?"

When asked how his playing background helps him, Waryan says, "I have been fortunate to win a number of events which helps me to understand the preparation involved in winning and to communicate that preparation to my students to help them win their own tournaments. I am more proud of the tournaments that my students have won over the years. I enjoy working with different personalities. The challenge is in the communication process no matter the ability level of students. I enjoy a good plan coming together to watch a student realize their dreams coming to fruition. It takes time to develop a relationship and trust. I work best with the people who have the patience to bring the plan to full term."

So, if you really want to improve your game, go see Craig Waryan. He'll leave no stone unturned in helping you. You'll be working with a true gentleman and a teacher who knows how to get the best out of each student.
