Fuel Yourself Before Hitting The Course
By Lisa Holtan

It is prime golf season here in the Midwest. I hope you are enjoying the game and getting out to different golf courses in the area. This month we are going to talk about how to properly fuel your body before heading out for the golf course. Making sure your body is properly fueled before hitting the course is very important and will give you the nutritional ingredients to support your golf game. Here are some tips to help you:

1. If you are playing a round of golf in the morning make sure to eat a balanced breakfast. Include protein, carbohydrates and fat. Some ideas are: eggs and toast with peanut butter, yogurt with fruit and granola or a protein smoothie
2. Perhaps you are going to play a round in the mid-afternoon-make sure to bring snacks with so you are not tempted by the goodies on the golf cart. Some ideas for snacks are: protein bar, almonds, or beef jerkey.
3. If you are wanting to take advantage of the twilight specials at your golf course eating a light supper is best before going on the course. You don't want anything that is too heavy. Fish and brown rice is a great option, steak salad, or a grilled chicken wrap with fruit.

Making sure you are properly fueled before hitting the greens will give your body the energy it needs to play. Eating a balanced diet of protein, carbohydrates and fat will ensure you are supporting your body with the macro nutritents it needs to use. Carbohydrates gives the body energy to play, protein helps stabilize the blood sugar and build/repair all tissues in the body and fat helps to control blood sugar levels in the body as well as helps you feel satisfied.
