|Golf Course Water Use And Pollution|
By R.J. SmileyAs his focus is drawn deeper into the magic sphere the Psychic sees the Mississippi River as it flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Every river, every creek and every stream that drains over 50% of the American landmass into the mighty river come to life. Every molecule of water flowing into each tributary is illuminated in flowing white neon lights. Suddenly the color of the flow of each tributary changes; water filled with fertilizers, bug-killing chemicals from farm fields flows in yellow sludge. Rainwater filled with raw manure from cattle and hog feed lots, seeping silently into the grand river become a bright orange flow. On the sunrise side of the mother of all rivers, smoke, filled with fine particles of pollution from factories and coal-fired power, is spewed into the atmosphere. Some of these carcinogens fall to the earth like fine pepper flakes others remain aloft. These grey flakes, filled with carcinogens, are picked up by the next rain and added to the toxic mix flowing to the sea in a purple neon flow. The pollution continues in different colors from every lawn, every dog park and rubbish heap. The Psychic eyes become misty as he witnesses the widening dead zone in the Gulf of Mexico where the big river empties.
As his focus goes deeper into the crystal orb, the Psychic observes a new drainage map of the Mississippi River. Scattered across the map are thousands of small lights that glow in a golden hue. As he zooms in on a light located in his neighborhood, the Psychic realizes that each light represents a golf course within the immense drainage. The golden light begins to intensify causing the light from each golf course to grow steadily brighter... then brighter yet. Suddenly each light erupts like a flashbulb, temporally blinding the Psychic. As his dilated vision slowly clears, the Psychic blinks and rubs his eyes. Magically a lighthouse has replaced each light representing a golf course. Near the summit of every lighthouse, a slowly revolving beacon illuminates the golf course and contiguous area. The Psychic notices that the waters flowing into the tributaries of the Mississippi are becoming less and less clouded - less polluted!
The Psychic pulls away from the tell-all ball as he strokes his chin in questioning contemplation. The bristly stubble tells the Psychic that he has spent more than a day locked inside that crystal ball. "Water is extremely important. As the earth's population continues to grow, pollution around the world will increase." What is the meaning of lighthouses and cleaner water?"
As the Psychic's attention is drawn back to the ball, he sees a golf course maintenance building filled with organic fertilizer. He sees mechanics capturing each drop as oil is changed on vehicles. The Psychic sees compost piles.
The Psychic had always felt that even though he loves to play golf, he felt that a golf course, using all those chemicals and fertilizers, must be harmful to the environment. Maintenance vehicles and golf carts that burn carbon fuels inefficiently send tons of pollutants into the ozone layer.
The picture inside his clear globe changes. The Psychic now has a worm's eye view of a wall-to-wall mat of turf and roots that cover a golf course. The magnified view shows the Psychic the natural filter that healthy turf provides within a golf course. With natural filters like golf course turf, clean, naturally filtered, water flows into the creeks that fill the mother of all rivers. From his worms eye view the Psychic feels grey water (raw sewage with the solids removed) being used to irrigate the golf courses. The natural filters provided by the turf grasses send clean filtered water down stream while the turf plants themselves thrive on the nutrients found in the grey water.
In addition to a natural filter for water, the Psychic sees the golf industry as a leader in pollution reduction. With improved communication skills, superintendents have the ability to monitor maintenance practices and equipment use. The Psychic notices that a variety of grasses are being used on courses. Many of the grasses are drought resistant varieties that require little or no irrigation - the less water that is used in maintaining golf course turf, the more pure water that will be available for general use by all humans, not just those who play the game.
As the Psychic looks further into the future the innovations in maintenance practices improve and become more automated. The Psychic sits back and smiles as he realizes that mankind must first mess it up before he can learn and improve from his mistakes... even in the golf industry.
