There's truth to the statement that "idyllic wedding sites make for great golf courses." And vice versa, of course. People like to have the most significant days of their lives stamped by the greatness of beautiful surroundings. And people like to enjoy great golf - at an extremely generous value - in a place where they wish they could have been married. The Bluffs at Coffee Mill presents both opportunities in a mutually beneficial relationship, with strong expressions of love from guests, loaded with permanently impressive perks. We call that combination "unforgettable."

The Bluffs at Coffee Mill has won numerous awards for their matrimonial presentations, for their tremendous banquet facility and the photogenic awesomeness of their Wabasha bluff-side property. There are at least a dozen different on-site locations where photographers can snap that "mantelpiece shot" of couples and their wedding parties, of class graduations, family reunions... celebrations of all and any sorts. Take a stroll around the facility grounds and you'll find yourself standing on a precipice, tiptoeing along a fountain-filled pond, towering above the Mississippi River valley and/or taking in the ten-to-fifty mile views, surrounded by flowers and trees, and an assortment of richly defined natural earth formations.

Taking all of those vivid descriptions into account, it's hard to believe that we haven't yet mentioned the incredibly diverse template on which all of y'all stick-swingers get to play your glorious game. That's right, beautiful as this property might be to the average party guest (and Instagram account holder) it is a bountiful ball of a playground for the EVERY GOLFER up for a round of fine good times. Situated only two miles west of Wabasha - on Highway 60 - The Bluffs of Coffee Mill is the terrestrial lovechild of the Mississippi River and Chippewa Valleys. Here where so many fairways rise and fall, where elevation changes blend with flatlands and where plateaus and valleys reach their greatest peaks... here you find open runways and wide receptive greens, water hazards and tree-lined strips of score-friendly hole designs.

Originally designed in 1966 as a 9-hole course, the routing was far too packed and popular to leave alone. The land in this location begged four decades for a full 18, and so came to be properly built. The championship opening was celebrated in 2003 and later nominally transformed as well from simply Coffee Mill to the more extravagant (and fitting) The Bluffs, in order to recognize the visually-stoked draw golfers pour in from Rochester, La Crosse, the Twin Cities and beyond to give a shot (or 99).

With a 275-yard full grass driving range, men's and women's locker rooms, a full-service bar and outdoor patio, pro shop and a dining capacity that exceeds 200, the owners of the property have flushed all of the possibilities out to their fullest realities, and are now reveling in the overall success. Director of Golf, Chuck Rowe, tries not to boast too much as he describes his daily office views and responsibilities. "It's pretty much the perfect life, getting up every day and coming in to this amazing beauty... meeting so many people daily just happy to be here and then waving them off at the end of their visits even happier... knowing all the efforts everyone put in to build this place have resulted in so much satisfaction for so many. Every day at The Bluffs is an honest reflection of 'the good life.'" The guy sounds like he's talking about Pebble Beach. He laughs. "Why not? It's about making the most of what you have... and we try to do that here."

I can appreciate that. I can also appreciate the fact I've played three rounds at The Bluffs and haven't lost a single ball yet. Because one part of my game tends to give out when another is on fire, that hasn't necessarily translated into better scores, but the golf itself is an all-around fair test of every club. Another thing I appreciate. Every year the course continues to improve, as the owners invest in making the absolute most of their "location, location, location" and views.

The Bluffs is a worthy addition to a powerful Mississippi River rota - an annual "should play" bonus that complements trips you're already taking to Mississippi National and/or The Jewel. I say that not to compare one to the other - worthy or not - but to insist that the diversity in the spectacular quality of layouts along this route is more than worth your investigation. Get more from your Southeast Minnesota golf trips. Get to know them all... and trust that one trip to The Bluffs at Coffee Mill will lead to more.
