A quote from Doug Hanson, General Manager, "We are getting more and more golfers from across the river. Those Twin Cities golfers really appreciate our excellent conditions and fair pricing."

While excellent maintenance is the standard that all great golf courses are judged; River Falls Golf Club is excellent because of its timeless design. In 1929, during the Golden Age of Golf (the first golf boom), this beautiful golf course, that is the second oldest golf course in Western Wisconsin, was conceived to visually follow the terrain. In those Golden Days, before giant earth moving machines were brought onto farmland where overnight a 180 acre farm can be transformed into a gimmicked-up, water-hazard laden piece of golf sculpture, River Falls Golf Club was designed and constructed to follow the natural flow of land. Club founders chose a fabulous piece of property. Those early members found a golf course where Mother Nature had spent thousands of years doing the heavy earth moving. With the dirt moving already completed, they only needed seed, throw in time and mowing to complete their course nearly 100 years ago. From hilltop tees, many holes play into natural valleys that made perfect fairways. Throughout the course, Mother Nature's design provides stunning landscape views of St. Croix River Valley.

"The layout has not changed," says Hanson. "But the conditioning of the golf course continues to be improved. Our goal is to make the golf course better each day. We have made major investments in maintenance practices and our superintendent, Ben Sanford, and his dedicated staff take great pride in their work. They continually receive a flow of complements from our first time customers like, 'I can't believe that we can play a golf course that is (I shouldn't say it, but) better conditioned than our country club for less than $40 dollars.'"

Hanson goes on to say, "We have continued to improved the clubhouse. Almost everything has been replaced or upgraded. We want to give it a light and airy feel. With the wrap around windows, golfers have told us that it's almost like being outside. We understand we must have a great golf course, but it takes more than a golf course and a great price point to attract our growing customer base from the Twin Cities. We want our clubhouse operation to be of equal quality."

If having to play a wide variety of different shots is required to make it a good course, River Falls is a great golf course. The course, where no two holes are alike, features dogleg right holes, dogleg left holes, uphill holes and down hill holes. Most of the large greens have some severe undulations, meaning that a different pin placement means an entirely different strategy is required for that days round. However, there are a few greens that are very flat. All the greens are very fast and as smooth as glass. Once golfers get the speed down they are amazed at how many balls find the hole.

If you have never played River Falls, this author would suggest that you plan to play this very unique golf course at least a couple of times. Shot placement is at a premium and your second time around will give you the confidence to be a pin seeker.

Every Monday, all season long, River Falls has a flat price of $27 for senior golfers. This exceptional rate includes green fee and cart. At that rate senior golfers will have enough left over for a great burger and brew on the patio. For non-senior golfers the rates are still exceptional. Weekday rates are only $32 for green fee and cart, only $25 if you want to challenge your endurance and walk the course. Even the weekend rate of $39 is less than many public golf courses charge as a walking rate. For golfers who want their son or daughter to learn their favorite game, River Falls offers a Kids Play Free deal on Saturday and Sunday after 3:00 for kids under age 14. (Parent green fee required.) Spring Rates are in effect until May 19th. See all rates at riverfallsgolfclub.com.

For a day spent enjoying Mother Nature's evolving handy work while playing an incredible golf course, spend a day at River Falls Golf Club. You will go back for the second time.
