When discussing golf, there are a select few individuals who are recognized by just their first name. If someone were to say, "Arnie, Annika, and Hollis," most Minnesota and Wisconsin golfers could fill in the last names, "Palmer, Sorenstam, and Cavner."

What if this threesome combined forces to create a golf course that's an easy drive from your home? Are you getting excited? Would it add fuel to your fire if the 477-acres surrounding this golf course is a site Cavner calls, "The greatest piece of property in the Twin Cities."

In June of 2017, the former Tartan Park in Lake Elmo will transform itself into the 18-hole Royal Golf Club. The front nine will be christened "The Queen," after Annika Sorenstam places her architectural stamp on it. The back nine will open as "The King," and the design will include Arnold Palmer's signature.

Arnie And Annika Are All In
Hollis Cavner, the man behind the 3M Championship, found his ears perking up when he heard that 3M was considering the sale of the 53-year-old Tartan Park Golf Course. Tartan Park's beauty was definitely in the eye of the beholder. Whereas real estate developers saw rolling acreage with two picturesque lakes as a residential gold mine, Cavner envisioned a new golf course as the main drawing card.

Cavner is honored to call Palmer and Sorenstam close friends. When Cavner shared his Royal Golf Club vision, both legends were interested in forging an even closer bond. Palmer and Sorenstam had played Tartan Park in the past during corporate events arranged by Cavner. They believed the Lake Elmo site offered the potential for something special.

Whereas Tartan Park included 27 holes, the new Royal Golf Club will feature 18. The former third nine acreage will be devoted to villas and luxury housing. "The new homes will be positioned far enough outside the golf course's perimeter that they won't come into play. We're emphasizing golf as number one," Cavner said.

The Clock is Ticking On 2017
The revamping and construction of Royal Golf Club has already begun. "We're taking out all the old greens and tee boxes. We're re-contouring the course, as well as adding white sand pro-style capillary bunkers. We'll build a new restaurant, new fitness center, and the clubhouse is undergoing renovation. Our course will have a country club feel, but will be affordable. A goal is to make Royal Golf Club family friendly," Cavner said.

One of the ways Royal Golf Club should appeal to a large audience is that each hole will have five to six tee boxes. Each golfer can play to the yardage that works best for him or her. Cavner, Palmer, and Sorenstam were adamant about seeing Royal Golf Club as a venue to grow the game. Kids' Camps, golf training by instructors skilled in assisting young people, junior golf, golf mentoring programs, and even scenic walking trails will be staple elements to the new course experience.

Get Ready For The Legends At Lake Elmo
Cavner is leaning heavily on his incredible golf network to make Royal Golf Club a one-of-a-kind experience. Cavner has tapped the services of Pebble Beach Executive Paul Spengler to assist in front-end operations work leading up to the course's opening. Ultimately, the "service, service, service" ambiance that golf fans expect at the 3M Championship will be par for the course when playing Royal Golf Club.

Cavner is laying the groundwork for bringing one of the most popular aspects of the 3M Championship to Lake Elmo. "My plan is to have up to 16 of the game's greatest players visit Royal Golf Club after our opening next year. Royal Golf Club will be a public course, so this event is open to everyone," Cavner said.

What's the most exciting feedback that Cavner has heard since the Royal Golf Club announcement was made in March? "First of all, everyone is ecstatic that this property wasn't simply a new housing development. Secondly, everyone is really excited about a new golf course opening in the Twin Cities. The icing on the cake is Arnie and Annika's involvement in our project," Cavner said.

After working with Chuck at a Habitat For Humanity build this week, and being a avid golfer, I look forward to bringing my fellow golfers to a new coarse close to home in 2017.
